Brazil is quickly becoming known as a design powerhouse with the many awards won for its design projects submitted to IDEA/Brazil.  IDEA/Brazil, the Brazilian version of the IDEA Awards is promoted by the design organization Objeto Brasil and led by Joice Joppert Leal.

Objeto Brasil is a non-government organization created in 1996 with the task of promoting Brazilian Design in Brazil and to the world, whether it is the fruit of craftsmanship or high technology. The organization’s goal is to foster the “Brazil” brand worldwide and emphasize the importance of design to national business, development and innovation.  Objeto Brasil has promoted numerous conventions, exhibitions, partnerships, trainings, publications, lectures and other actions in Brazil, including the exhibition Design nos 500 Anos at Pinacoteca do Estado and Parque da Luz, and abroad, taking Brazilian Design to Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Japan, the United States and Scandinavian countries. In a partnership between Objeto Brasil and IDSA, the winners of the IDEA/Brazil are entered automatically into the IDEA awards judged in the United States.

At the 2008 IDEA/Brazil, out of 350 submissions, 53 projects won either a gold, silver, or bronze award.  All the winners were entered into the IDEA competition in the U.S. Brazil became the first South American country to win 12 awards in the U.S., claiming third place behind South Korea with 19 and the U.S. with 119. Bloomberg Businessweek covered the event in a special report: http://www.businessweek.com .

In 2009, Brazil’s design work competed in 18 categories, including one exclusive to Brazil:  jewelry. Brazil won 2 IDEA gold awards for projects in 2009, including The Havaianas store in São Paulo (below). Other categories awarded were industrial products, personal accessories, home living, environments, eco-design, packaging, transportation and student projects.

BrazilianDecor.com sources the best products in Brazilian design for our customers.  We celebrate the beauty and innovative, award-winning designs originating from Brazil.

BrazilianDecor.com is excited to announce the addition of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted furniture from Brazil to our product line – Coffee Tables, Accent Tables, Dining Tables, Consoles, Benches, Stools & Ottomans. This unique, high-end furniture is made from eco-friendly materials and promotes environmental sustainability. The wood used by our artisans to create these beautiful pieces is certified by IBAMA and other accredited environmental organizations. Some of the wood is reclaimed from decaying bridges, old barns, and other structures that are sometimes over 100 years old, but most comes from naturally fallen trees and rare tree trunks found at the bottom of rivers. These hidden treasures are still well preserved in the remote areas of Brazil, and waiting to be discovered and transformed into works of art.

The distinctive beauty of our eco-friendly furniture is evident in the rich grain and the natural, aged patina of the wood.  The tight growth rings show the superior density of the wood from ancient trees which give the furniture a one-of-a-kind appearance that cannot be replicated in new wood.

Our furniture will add a chic, luxurious touch of Brazil to your home and help contribute to the betterment of our planet. BrazilianDecor.com is committed to investing in sustainability and working to preserve the environment.  We strive to be a resource for beautiful, eco-friendly furniture that has been manufactured in the most sustainable way.

Why Use Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Furnishings in Your Home or Office?

Eco-Friendly furniture has been around for some time, but now it seems to be going mainstream. Environmental concerns such as awareness of how deforestation impacts climate change and the effects of toxic finishes on the air inside homes, have led furniture buyers to demand eco-friendly furniture.

Manufacturers are transitioning into greener resources and ways of production. In the last decade furniture imports rose due to lower costs, but the concern for a smaller carbon footprint is behind the beginning of a gradual shift towards furniture that helps to preserve the environment.

Diminishing resources and pollution concerns have led to more recycled or re-purposed materials. Material from torn down buildings is being used for furniture as a step taken to reduce landfills.

At BrazilianDecor.com, we understand that each of our customers have varying decorating desires.  Feel free to call us at 1-212-202-5527 – Press 2 and one of our design agents will work with you to help pick the right piece for your home or office.  We are dedicated to providing our customers with exceptional customer service and look forward to being your go-to resource for chic, eco-friendly Brazilian furniture.

It’s summer time and people around the globe are vacationing!  If you’re looking for a trip that’s unlike any other, head to the warm sands, lively cities and tropical forests of Brazil!

Color, magic, style and fun await in the land that’s enchanted travelers for centuries.  Not sure where to go?  Let us be your guide for two of the hottest “hot spots” this world has seen!

RIO DE JANEIRO

Haven’t heard of Rio de Janeiro?  We find that hard to believe!  Rio has been the subject of many songs and the site of numerous movies.  It’s also a spot where you can find one of the world’s most recognizable – not to mention incredible – tourist attractions, the 2330 foot Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado Mountain (see below).  It has been called the newest wonder of the world.

Rio is the place where you’ll find some of the planet’s most pristine beaches (including the Copacabana Beach made popular in a 1970s Barry Manilow hit) and plenty of opportunities to play!  Come at Carnival (“Carnaval”) time (40 days before Easter) and re-discover your inner child as you immerse yourself in Brazilian music, art and cuisine.

FERNANDO DE NORONHA

An archipelago of islands in the northeast of Brazil, Fernando de Noronha may well be called the “Hawaii” of South America.

A total of 21 islands comprise Fernando de Noronha, which is part of the state of Pernambuco.  East of Pernambuco state, these islands lie in the warm, blue-green waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

As a bit of history, Fernando de Noronha was released after a campaign waged by environmentalist Jose Truda Palazzo, Jr., in 1988.  As a result, a generous portion of the archipelago was declared a national park area.  Thus, species that are commonly found there, such as the Rotators Dolphin (stenella longirostris), can be seen daily by visitors to this paradise.

If you’re craving a getaway that will leave you breathless and enable you to enjoy the best that nature has to offer, Fernando de Noronha should be at the top of your itinerary.

It’s the first day of Summer and Brazilian Decor wants to celebrate with you. To kick off the first week of the summer season, receive 10% off all jewelry purchases (June 21 – June 28). The offer will last only a week! Check out our 2010 Jewelry Collection at www.braziliandecor.com. Coupon Code: Summer2010

Niemeyer’s Brazilian Architecture:  Brazen, Forward-Thinking and Brilliant

The architecture of the Brazilian landscape is made up of a hodge-podge of contemporary structures and traditional spaces.  Because Brazil has experienced such an influx of different architectural styles from around the world, the country truly offers a plethora of building types and styles.

Behind all these architectural wonders are Brazilian architects, whose hands and minds helped shape the skyline in fascinating, quirky and incredible ways.  And one of the most well-known of the architects hailing from Brazil is Oscar Niemeyer.

OSCAR NIEMEYER

Rio de Janeiro-born Niemeyer has been heralded around the world as a gifted architect with a passion for all that is progressive in architecture.  His works can be seen in many different parts of the globe, including the United Nations Headquarters, New York City (shown below).

Niemeyer’s signature technique presents itself as an ability to create architecture that mimics organic curves and forms, thereby turning what could be deemed “just” structures into works of art.  Moreover, he consistently challenges the notions of what can be done with common building materials, such as concrete.  Evidence of his ability in this arena can be seen in the Cathedral of Brasil (shown below), a powerful building that immediately evokes emotion from the viewer.

Like many artists, Niemeyer has faced his fair share of criticisms.  He also was exiled for a period by his government due to his left-leaning political views.  Yet his name remains synonymous with free-thinking architects and his popularity among architects and fans has not waned.

At over 100 years old, Niemeyer has only recently begun to slow down.  In fact, he was reportedly designing buildings at 100, a feat that reveals his passion for the industry he loves.  If you head to Brazil for a vacation, seek out his architectural creations.  You won’t be disappointed!
